It’s hard to not observe that the political environment we are currently living in is like nothing we have seen before. Love him or hate him, Donald Trump creates situations we have not dealt with before. He says things nobody would expect, and in the end, we don’t know if he is being serious, if he is just saying things to start a negotiation, or if he is just a crazy narcissist. Or maybe all of the above? I spend a lot of time trying to get on board with the belief that he is crazy like a fox, as his policies improve things like illegal immigration, global wars, and things like getting NATO countries to pay their fair share. There are clearly things that have been going on in the world that needed shaking up, and by definition it takes someone with a different way of doing things to shake up the status quo. At the same time, I have a hard time believing the economic policies being proposed can lead anywhere good, in particular over longer time frames. Maybe I can be proven wrong. I hope I will be as I would prefer to not suffer financially as a US citizen.
But here is the thing. As a trader, none of these thoughts should affect my trading. I have a trading process, and none of it has to do with politics, politicians, or for that matter Donald Trump. It’s hard not to get caught up in everything that is going on, especially since it is so in our face every day. But the key, from a trading point of view, is don’t let it. Let the market tell you what to do, not your opinion of what is going on politically and what you may think it will lead to in some time frame. This is what I tell myself every day.
